lash and i may have gone to different high schools together. back then he was a bully and prankster. always trying to intimidate teachers and coaches with his whip. if you run into him tell him MODINE says hello and that i haven't forgotten he still owes me for introducing him to his first wife lulu. their marriage lasted until lash lost most of the use of his tongue when he tried to say "i love you lulu larue" too many times in a rowe.
I was forwarded your Times-News article about the Coughenour brothers meeting Lash LaRue and the lasting memories the meeting created. It was pretty factual as I remember. I,too, was there for that event at the Buddy Club on Saturday moring. However, I do not believe the hat he wore is characterized as a "Ten Gallon" topper. Very good article.
April 1st,2009..ref:Lash LaRue coming to Kingsport 1950. My husbands name is also,Jim Klepper, not the one you speak of in the article,he also is in sales..But, was a VERY YOUNG boy in 1950. Since you insist on having the last names of people in your writings, he has had to explain this isn't of whom you speak and "no" he isn't that old. Since, you "must" write your "folksy" column why not just use first names if the telephone directory has more than one listed with the same name.
I remember my Father taking me to the theatre to see Lash. I was about seven years old. I don't remember alot about the day, except that during the show Lash was attempting to take the cap off of a coke bottle setting on a table near by, with his whip, when the whip backlashed and hit him in the eye. It must have been a bad injury because Lash left the stage and later we all had to leave. I wonder if anyone remembers that event. Harold McConnell, Kingsport.
