Charlie Leonard Scores 50; Harkleroad Scores 53

Charlie Leonard set the D-B basketball scoring record of 50 in 1957. It stood for 27 years until Randy Harkleroad broke the mark in 1984.
Note also the D-B football stars who signed college letters of intent the same day Charlie broke Stan Johnson's record of 49, set three years earlier.

Those stories about Charlie just keep coming. I read one by Bill Lane a couple of years ago that said Charlie was real sick and was to have a life-saving surgery. I responded to Bill to try and find out how Charlie came through and to tell him how Charlie believed in me as a young man, even though I flunked Sports 101, and how he was a wonderful man to work for during my 3 brief years at TEC. You see Charlie wasn't just a fantastic sports figure, I barely knew he played sports back then, but I knew him as Charlie Leonard the man, whom I deeply respected. I'd love to hear how Charlie is doing now. Rick Malone Blountville, TN

I have very vivid memories of the great basketball teams that D B had in the early 50's. The one I remember the most was when they came to my Home town of Surgoinsville to Play the Surgoinsville Eagles at our High School. It was in the very early 50's as I was only about 12 Years old at that time. This game was for the State Championship and Surgoinsville won. The crowd was so large cars were lined up alongside Main St.for at least 3/4 of a mile. Sure wish You could write an article about this great game.

I remember '84 game that Randy Harkleroad played in. He had 31 points at the half, while only missing two shots. NO ONE could have stopped him on this night. While I watched him play many times, on this particular night he made everything...many times with two or three people guarding him.
He was by far the best shooter that I ever watched, especially toward the end of the year. He virtually put the '84 team on his back and lead them to the state playoffs before being put out by Doug Roth's (Tennessee)team.

Randy's record will NEVER be broken. When he broke the record in 1983, the 3-point line was NOT in play yet. The 3-pointer started in 1988! I know that some players have come close, but they all have had 3 pointers.....just remember, Harkleroad only had two point baskets.
