What was Broad Street like when you were growing up? Make a list of the stores then compare your list to the actual store lineup as recorded in the old city directories.
1947 Broad Street lineup from the Kingsport City Directory.
I just ran across this blog and am wondering whether this "Vince Staten" is the same one who used to write all those typos in the Louisville Times back in the 70's and early 80's. Well, if it is, then I need to complain. I am bald and when I went to the barber shop I did not get a half price haircut. I think his dishonesty began with those typos.
This brought back some memories, since I went with my best friend, Glenda, and her mom, EVERY Sat. to Broad Street, and then to Giant Food Store, from the early 60's to 66.We would start our journey at the corner of Broad & Main and work our way down, usually eating at Kresses. SO many memories!!!!! Gee, now all the kids of today know are the malls and the big chain stores.
Vince Staten is the author of fifteen books, including "Did Monkeys Invent the Monkey Wrench," "Can You Trust a Tomato in January," "Ol' Diz: A Biography of Dizzy Dean," and the barbecue travel guide, "Real Barbecue." He has been a columnist for the New York Daily News, the Louisville Courier-Journal, the Dayton Daily News and the Kingsport Times News.
